SNF SINERGIA Project CORINT "Elucidating CORrrosion of iron in porous media by new quantitative multimodal IN-situ Tomography"

Your tasks

This multidisciplinary project aims to make a breakthrough in the fundamental understanding of iron corrosion processes occurring within opaque porous media. The limitations of the use of traditional, destructive analytical techniques for studying corrosion is a common problem limiting progress in different fields (e.g. archaeology, conservation, civil engineering, radioactive waste disposal,…). Based on encouraging recent progress made in multimodal imaging, we aim to develop and validate a cutting-edge X-ray and neutron computed tomography method, tailored for the in-situ study of corrosion phenomena in opaque porous media.

  • Develop and implement experimental bimodal imaging procedures using neutron and X-ray tomography to investigate corrosion phenomena in different types of samples (e.g. archaeological, from civil engineering, artificial model samples,…)
  • Develop sampling procedures in close collaboration with the external project partners
  • Develop and implement data processing protocols for the evaluation of the bimodal data
  • Coordinate investigations with internal & external project partners
  • As experienced postdoctoral fellow, you will support the PhD research projects by advising and helping on experimental and data evaluation

Your profile

  • You hold a PhD in physics, engineering, data science or related field
  • You have experience in designing, carrying out and documenting experiments
  • You have experience in carrying out CT reconstruction and image data processing
  • You feel good and stay motivated when working independently
  • You feel responsible for a thorough documentation of your work including the preparation of manuscripts for publication
  • Good level of English as working language in spoken and written form is mandatory
