In a multidisciplinary project expanding chemical separations of radionuclides with modern electrochemical techniques

Your tasks

  • Analyse the potential of electrochemical techniques for use in radionuclide separation
  • Identify chances of novel combined separation schemes and demonstrate their potentials in the laboratory
  • Plan and perform experiments using model systems and extend those to environmental and industrial samples in useful steps
  • Evaluate the tools developed in the project to investigate the electrochemical properties of superheavy elements, e.g. Mt, Ds, or Rg

Your profile

  • Master degree in chemistry or strongly related scientific major, having prior knowledge on at least one of the disciplines required, radiochemistry, electrochemistry or analytical chemistry
  • Ability and willingness to learn quickly and acquire proficiency in all chemical disciplines
  • Analytic eye for details and desire to meet highest quality standards
  • Proficient in the use of computers, e.g., for controlling measurement instrumentation; experience with databases is welcomed

Thesis work will be performed at the Radioanalytics Group at PSI with access to radiochemical laboratories. The PhD student will enroll at the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETH Zurich with Prof Dr Christophe Copéret. In addition, parts of the thesis are expected to be made in collaboration with the Heavy Elements research group at PSI. The PhD candidate can make use of a wide supporting network of scientific knowledge in all related disciplines both at ETH and at PSI.
