- Establish small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as a method to quantify the distribution of liquid water in catalyst layers of polymer electrolyte fuel cells
- Develop an operando cell for SAXS measurements and perform campaigns at the synchrotron facility
- Develop and apply numerical models in order to interpret the SAXS data of material samples provided by project partners
- Use results to define guidelines for the design of improved catalyst layers for high power polymer electrolyte fuel cells
- Publish results in well regarded journals
You hold a Master degree in physics, chemistry, material or engineering sciences and are acquainted with the interaction of X-ray radiation with matter and X-ray scattering. Furthermore, you are interested in experimental as well as modeling work and you like to adapt your skills to a new interdisciplinary working environment. In addition, a broad interest in porous media, energy and electrochemistry is of advantage as well as a very good command of the English language.
The PhD work and experiments will be hosted at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Villigen, the PhD degree will be awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ).
