The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

For the Solid State Dynamics Group we are looking for a

PhD Student

Your tasks

  • PhD Thesis in condensed matter physics
  • Investigation of the existence of `charge ice’ correlated disorder and its effect on the properties of beta-pyrochlores, characterisation of novel states and phase transitions originating from the charge ice structure
  • Support of user activities at the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and/or teaching activities generally at the institution of the thesis advisor
  • Synthesis and crystal growth of beta-pyrochlore materials
  • Characterisation of beta-pyrochlore powders and crystals by neutron and x-ray diffraction, diffuse scattering, and total scattering
  • Investigation of magnetic and lattice properties of beta-pyrochlores by bulk measurements and neutron scattering
  • Interpretation of data and modelling of properties to gain a systematic understanding of the beta pyrochlores

Your profile

  • Master degree in physics or chemistry
  • Experience in materials synthesis and characterisation
  • Experience in numerical data analysis
