Postdoctoral Fellow

Search for the muon electric dipole moment using the frozen spin technique at PSI

Your tasks

  • An international initiative lead by scientists at PSI is preparing the first dedicated search for a muon electric dipole moment (muEDM) with unprecedented sensitivity employing the frozen spin technique
  • You will prepare the requirements for all features of the new instrument based on an optimization of the statistical sensitivity and a comprehensive analysis of systematic effects
  • You will setup a finite element model of the magnetic and electric fields in the experiment
  • You will setup a full Monte Carlo model of the experiment from injection of muons into the storage ring, storage and detection of the decay positrons

Your profile

We seek a talented and ambitious person who is highly motivated to work on this competitive project, willing to lay the groundwork for an exciting new measurement in particle physics within a new international collaboration.
  • You hold a PhD in physics
  • You have experience in low energy particle physics preferable with muons
  • You have very good programming skills and experience in Monte Carlo simulation
  • You know how to use software to setup and analyze finite element models
  • You enjoy working with pencil and paper to derive basic algebraic expressions
  • You feel good and stay motivated when working independently
  • You feel responsible for a thorough documentation of you work including the preparation of manuscripts for publication
  • A good level of English (C1) as working language in spoken and written is mandatory
  • Knowledge of German or willingness to quickly learn German is a plus
