PhD Student

Metal oxide-based oxygen catalysts for the electrochemical splitting of water splitting

Your tasks

  • Your work will be focused on the development of metal oxide-based catalysts for the anodic reaction of alkaline electrolyzers. The catalsts will be synthesized and charachterized in collaboration with different research groups
  • The project aims at the developments of metal oxyide catalysts for energy conversion and storage through water electrolysis. Electrochemistry will be the core of the PhD Studies. Advanced characterization methods (synchroton facilities) will be used for the materials characterization.
  • During your PhD you will interact extensively with your collegues within the electrochemistry department, the Swiss Light Source and, international collaborators.

Your profile

Completed study in Chemistry or Materials Science, with experience in electrochemistry and talent for experimental work. Experience in X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a plus. You have an active interest in experimental work and take the initiative for new solutions; being able to work independently in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research team. Good communication skills in English are required. You will be registered as a PhD student at ETHZ ( and the Thesis advisor will be Prof. Thomas Justus Schmidt.
