Diffraction for Condensed Matter

Your tasks

  • Operate and develop the Surface Diffraction station, equipped with a 5-circle diffractometer, mainly performing diffraction in reflection condition
  • Develop a personal scientific research program based on advanced X-Ray scattering techniques on films/single crystals, such as resonant X-Ray diffraction, pump-probe techniques or extreme conditions sample environments
  • Support and implement a joint user program with SwissFEL groups for the characterization of materials at different time scales, also with non-synchrotron-based sources

Your profile

  • PhD degree in Physics, Materials Science or related subject
  • Experience in running experiments at large-scale facilities
  • Solid scientific research experience with diffraction methods
  • Programming skills, experience with time-resolved experiments (pump-probe) are considered advantages
  • Excellent communication skills in English and strong organizational skills for being proactive across multiple research initiatives in an interdisciplinary environment
We seek for a motivated and dynamic person, able to push technical and scientific boundaries. You will become part of a vibrant research environment, using state of the art instrumentation to perform your own and collaborative research on condensed matter systems. In your position as instrument responsible for the Surface Diffraction station of the Materials Science beamline at the Swiss Light Source synchrotron, you will collaborate strongly with different groups based at PSI’s large-scale facilities to investigate the interplay between structural, electronic and magnetic orders, under static or dynamic perturbations. You will lead the further development of the end-station to answer present and future questions in Materials Science.
