Call for Proposals for µSR Experiments at the SµS

The call 1/2026 for the muon spectroscopy instruments FLAME, GIANT/MIXE, GPS, GPD, HAL-9500, LEM, and VMS (previously DOLLY) is now open.

DEADLINE:

  • December 1, 2025, 23:59 (Swiss time)

ALLOCATION PERIOD:

  • June to September 2025

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • There will be a 2nd call with deadline June 1, 2026, for the allocation period September to November/December 2026. This second call will be limited to the μSR instruments FLAME, GPD, GPS, HAL-9500 and LEM.
  • Due to the planned HIMB upgrade of the HIPA facility the 2nd cycle of the following instruments is expected to end earlier than usual:
    -- LEM: November 16, 2026
    -- FLAME/GPS: November 30, 2026
    -- GPD: December 7, 2026
  • DOLLY has become the Versatile Muon Spectrometer (VMS) after spectrometer and sample environment upgrade in 2025.
  • GIANT(GermanIum Array for Non-destructive Testing)/MIXE for negative-muon elemental analysis is opened for the first time to the user community. 3 weeks of beamtime will be allocated in September 2026.
  • The instruments GIANT/MIXE and VMS will not be available for call 2/2026.
  • Due the HIMB upgrade of the HIPA facility, we do not expect user operation from January 2027 until August 2028. The final decision about the long shutdown will be announced at the end of 2025.
  • If you are not sure about the most suitable instrument for your research, necessary sample mass and sample alignment or any other experimental issue please discuss with the instrument scientists before the submission of the proposal.

NEXT DEADLINE for submission in DUO (call 1/2026):

  • December 1, 2025, 23:59 CET.

In addition to the normal access mode (i.e. Proposals) beam time can possibly be obtained through Requests for Urgent Beam Time (see below).

1. Proposals

  • Allocation periods: see above.
  • Deadline for submission in DUO for call 1/2026: December 1, 2025, 23:59 (Swiss time, CET).
  • Please note: this is a hard deadline - post deadline editing of proposals will be disabled.

2. Requests for Urgent Beam Time (Director's Discretion Time)

Reserved for feasibility tests or urgent measurements on new materials. A very limited amount of beam time is reserved for urgent beam time requests. For the request of urgent beam time (typically 1 or 2 days) an informal letter containing the relevant information about the project, the sample, the requested instrument and number of necessary days may be addressed electronically at any time of a running cycle to:
