PSI alumni at our partner companies: Dionysios Chionis, Axpo

How did you find your job?

I first came into contact with Axpo during my master's degree in Nuclear Engineering at ETH Zurich, when I completed my summer internship in the nuclear physics group. I was then able to write my master's thesis in the same group for six months. A few years later, when I was about to complete my doctorate at PSI/EPFL, there was an open position in the same Axpo team, which I applied for.

Why did you choose Axpo?

Firstly, Axpo is a leading electricity supplier in Switzerland with a significant presence in Europe, Asia and the USA. Secondly, the company makes a significant contribution to Switzerland's energy sustainability and has proven expertise in the operation of Swiss nuclear power plants. Thirdly, during my internship at Axpo I had the opportunity to get to know how the nuclear department works and gained a good impression of the professionalism and specialist knowledge of the employees. The decision to start my professional life at Axpo was very easy for me!

What does your typical working day look like at Axpo?

The working environment is very dynamic. Axpo succeeds in having a mix of experienced and young, talented employees and at the same time offers a trusting and motivating atmosphere. In the Nuclear Division, we always do everything we can to ensure the safe operation of Swiss nuclear power plants. That's why we are in very close contact with our colleagues at the Beznau and Leibstadt nuclear power plants and support them in all areas of the nuclear fuel cycle. In addition, we are in regular contact with our suppliers in various countries around the world and of course also with the Swiss authorities in order to provide evidence of the safe operation of the systems.

What do you particularly like about your job?

I learn something new every day, even though I've been working at Axpo for six years. This is something unique that always inspires and motivates me to continue my career here. I also have the opportunity to collaborate with experts who are helpful and always open to share their knowledge. Together, we can pursue the goal of operating the power plant with excellence. In addition, Axpo has always supported my professional development and given me the opportunity to launch new initiatives. What else could you ask for?

How did you make the transition to your new role? What was different, what was similar, or what surprised you?

I was very lucky to work in the same technical field as I did during my doctorate at PSI/EPFL. This enabled me to take on complex tasks very early in my professional role and apply my research background to real-world applications in Swiss industry. Compared to the time at PSI/EPFL, during which I worked on a single project, at Axpo I am involved in a variety of exciting projects and topics.

Which of the skills you acquired at PSI help you in your new role?

Firstly, the technical knowledge that I acquired during my studies helped me a lot in my work at Axpo. The high research standard at PSI/EPFL showed me that I am able to apply my knowledge to real world applications and projects. Secondly, during my studies at PSI, I further developed my communication skills through interaction with my colleagues at the institute, but also through regular exchanges with my international peers. These skills are crucial in the professional world, where you work with a wide variety of people.

Finally, the doctorate can be equated with a complex business project: Successful completion of the doctorate gave me the confidence that I can also successfully manage projects at Axpo.

What did you learn after switching from PSI to Axpo?

I was able to further deepen my specialist knowledge in the field of nuclear physics. I focused on the entire nuclear fuel cycle and acquired important knowledge about the operational aspects of nuclear power plants. In addition, Axpo provided me with various training courses on personnel management, management and self-management, which is of great importance for my role as group leader.

Is there anything you miss now that you are no longer at PSI?

I miss the environment at PSI and the exchange with the many international students in my professional life. I also long for the great times I was able to experience with the PSI Volleyball team, such as our training and participation in the international Atomiade. Great memories!

What would you like to tell younger PSI researchers?

Enjoy your time at PSI. It's a great environment and a top research center. Take the opportunity to talk to the people who work not only in your group but also in other areas, or with those you meet at research projects, conferences or training courses. Expand your network, and when a personal or professional opportunity comes your way, take it!
