About the Laboratory of Particle Physics

The Laboratory of Particle Physics (LTP) at the Paul Scherrer Institute pursues fundamental research, addressing some of the most up to date questions in modern, accelerator-based particle physics.

The results of our research allow for a better understanding of the basic building blocks of matter and the forces that act between them. Together with researchers from Switzerland and abroad, we use the world's most intensive sources for low-energy muons, pions and ultracold neutrons at PSI.

Our special know-how in detector construction, electronics and chip design is used for experiments at PSI, the CMS experiment at CERN, as well as in many applications and spin-offs of particle physics at PSI and worldwide.

The LTP trains electronics technicians and supervises many bachelor, master and doctoral theses. Members of the laboratory teach at the ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich and the University of Pisa. The LTP runs the Zuoz Summer School of Particle Physics every 2 years and the organizes the international PSI20xx workshop every 3 years.

Laboratory for Particle Physics – Video tour

On occasion of a regular external audit of our NUM research division in 2021, we provided the reviewers with this video of LTP activities not covered in a live tour of our main in-house experiments MEGII, Mu3e and n2EDM.
