EU PEGASOS

Duration: 2011-2014

Humidified section of the WHOPS - an instrument for the airborne measurement of the particles hygroscopic properties.

Scope of project

The Pan-European Gas-Aerosols-Climate Interaction Study (PEGASOS) is a large scale integrated project funded by the European Commission under the Framework Programme 7. One goal of this project is to provide better estimates of air pollution in Europe and its impact on climate.

Within this project, PSI will conduct airborne measurements on board of a Zeppelin and ground based mobile measurements with the PSI mobile laboratory. Intensive measurements are planned in 2012 and 2013 and will be conducted in the Po-Valley, Mid-west Europe, and Northern Europe. In addition, specific smog chamber experiments will be done at PSI for comparison with the field observations.

Currently, a white light humidified optical particle spectrometer (WHOPS) is developed for the employment on board of a Zeppelin. The WHOPS is a complementary instrument to the HTDMA and humidified nephelometer as it delivers size segregated information on the particles hygroscopic growth and refractive index.

The following questions will be addressed:
  • What are the aerosol hygroscopic properties and vertical profiles in the planetary boundary layer?
  • What are the relevant aerosol aging processes?
