Dosimetry Service of the Paul Scherrer Institute

The Dosimetry at the Paul Scherrer Institute offers accredited dosimetry services to internal and external clients in research, the nuclear sector, and government organizations, including emergency response agencies. For medical dosimetry needs, we recommend other accredited dosimetry services in Switzerland.

  • Personal whole-body dosimeters for external photon and beta radiation using RPL and OSL
  • Extremity personal dosimeters (finger ring dosimeters) for photon and beta radiation using thermoluminescence (TL)
  • Personal whole-body neutron dosimeters using PADC (Poly-Allyl Diglycol Carbonate;  also known as CR-39)
  • Environmental photon dosimeters with RPL
  • In-vivo radioactivity measurements (whole-body counters, thyroid monitors, urine and stool analyses)

In addition, we offer non-accredited luminescence and neutron dosimetry for special projects in research and industry.

  • Please use the latest version of our form (Link) for registrations and cancellations.
  • Please notify us of any changes (e.g., name, area of responsibility, address) by email at  dosimetry@psi.ch.
  • You can find our terms and conditions here.
  • Companies must hold a BAG posting permit for the deployment of personnel occupationally exposed to radiation.

In compliance with radiation protection regulations and the "General Directive for Radiation Protection at the Paul Scherrer Institute" (AW-96-18-01), individuals entering a controlled or supervised area must wear a dosimeter.

PSI EmployeesThe PSI employee can request a dosimeter using the “Order or change dosimetry” in CSS*.
ContractorsThe PSI contact person should request a dosimeter using the “Request access for contractors” in CSS.
DUO UserA dosimeter is requested automatically via the DUO registration process
Visiting Scientists The PSI contact person should request a dosimeter using the “External guest with IT account and access” or the “Request access for contractors” in CSS.
Visitors The PSI contact person should request an electronic personal dosimeter when requesting a badge for visitors (accompanied by PSI personnel without manual or technical activity) or on arrival at the entrance PSI West or PSI Ost.

*CSS: Service Catalog in Consumer Self Service, only available in the PSI Intranet

When a dosimeter is prepared, the users will receive an e-mail from the Dosimetry Service or from the DUO containing information on the dosimeter location.

Numbered dosimeter shelves are located at the entrance of PSI-West and PSI-East:

  • PSI Dosimeters must be worn visibly at chest level (or belly level for pregnant women) and only within PSI premises.
  • When not in use, dosimeter should be stored in the designated dosimeter shelf (the shelf number is printed on the dosimeter).
  • Lost, damaged, or accidentally irradiated dosimeters must be immediately reported to the Dosimetry Service.
  • Quarterly dosimeter exchange: Dosimeters are exchanged quarterly, with dates announced in PSIAktuell. Dosimeters deposited in the storage compartment will be exchanged on the designated exchange date.

Upon termination of your contract or your stay at PSI:

  • Place your dosimeter in the return box at the dosimetry service (OFLD/002 or WLGA/14; or
  • Send it by internal mail to the Dosimetry (OFLD/002).

If the dosimeter was not returned during the quarterly exchange, please send it immediately to the Dosimetry Service as above.

  • Request dose reports from the responsible manager or the Dosimetry service.
  • For PSI employees, access dose data from the last two years and dosimeter location in your profile in the Customer Self Service

The main Dosimetry Service is located at PSI-East
