Background

  • 1985-1991 Studies of Chemistry at the University of Duisburg and McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
  • 1990-1991 Diploma thesis in the solid state chemistry group at University of Duisburg. Topic: Investigations on the Structural Chemistry of Alkaline- and Alkaline Earth Chalcogenides of the Elements of the 5. main group. Supervisor: Prof. Dr. G. Henkel.
  • 1991-1995 Doctoral Thesis at the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Topic: Synthesis and Characterisation of new Chalcogenides of Niobium and Tantalum. Supervisor: Prof. Dr. W. Tremel.
  • 1995-1999 Member of the scientific staff of the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität in Mainz, working on high temperature synthesis, x-ray structure analysis, surface characterisation and electronic structure calculations.
  • Since 2002 Scientist at the Institute for Radio- and Environmental chemistry of the Paul Scherrer Institute in the groups Targetchemistry and Radwaste analytics. Theoretical modelling of the thermochemical properties of polonium. Experimental studies of the release of volatile species from molten metals as part of the project MEGAPIE. Investigation of volatile refractory metal compounds under molecular flow conditions. Volatilisation and deposition studies of nuclear reaction products in liquid metal targets. Chemical separation of radionuclides from liquid mercury.
Cooperation in international projects related to the development of liquid metal spallation targets such as EUROTRANS, EURISOL-DS, ESS-PP, GETMAT
