AEROLIT

Duration: 2013-2016

Contact: André Prévôt, andre.prevot@psi.ch
Sampling sites in Lithuania
Sampling sites in Lithuania

Project description

AEROLIT provides long-term, comprehensive measurements of carbonaceous aerosol composition at urban, rural, and coastal sites in Lithuania. Measurements include established techniques with proven source apportionment capabilities, such as online aerosol mass spectrometry and measurement of EC optical properties, AEROLIT also utilizes recently developed offline analytical techniques including high-resolution and thermal desorption/gas aerosol chromatography-based aerosol mass spectrometry, as well as bulk and compound specific isotope ratio analysis. These measurements are supplemented by measurements of molecular markers of biomass burning and 14C analysis to distinguish modern and fossil carbon

Field campaigns
  • Vilnius, Lithuania, 2013-2016
  • Preila, Lithuania, 2013-2016
  • Rugsteliskis, Lithuania, 2013-2016

Objectives

  • Identify and quantify the processes and souces governing spatial and temporal PM concentrations at urban, rural and coalstal locations in Lithuania.
  • Classify and quantify carbonaceous aerosol in term of emission mechanism, source geography (local vs. regional vs. trans-national), and source/precursor class (natural vs. anthropogenic, modern vs. fossil carbon)
  • Conduct targeted chemically resolved organic aerosol and related molecular-marker measurement campaigns in urban, rural and background sites for source apportionment.
  • Generate a comprehensive database of aerosol sources and composition suitable for advanced data analysis within AEROLIT and integration with future air quality modeling efforts beyond the scope of this project.

Funding
