IMPACT on track

For the funding period 2025-2028 PSI, together with the University of Zurich, are proposing the IMPACT project (www.psi.ch/impact) for the Swiss Roadmap for Research Infrastructures. In the context of IMPACT, two new target stations at HIPA will be realised, namely, unique intensities of muons for particle physics and materials science and protons for the development of radionuclides for radiochemistry, radiopharmacy and medicine.

In July 2022, the Swiss National Science Foundation reported the results from the scientific evaluation of the proposed projects to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). The IMPACT proposal, which contained a detailed Conceptual Design Report (CDR, see here) supporting the case, was awarded the highest ranking of A in all categories. The ETH council will continue to evaluate the feasibility and the financial plan of the project and will decide on the definite inclusion into the Swiss Roadmap for Research Infrastructures by the end of 2022.

This constitutes a major milestone in the project and we wish to express our deep appreciation to everyone involved in the project for the hard work that has brought us this far.
