Vision, Mission & Strategy

EEG leads integrated systems analysis to power sustainable, resilient, and fair energy futures for society.
We connect energy, economy, and environment through science-based insights that support real-world decisions and improve people’s lives.

Our mission is to improve understanding of energy transition pathways and to identify effective, evidence-based policy strategies for achieving a sustainable, secure, and resilient energy future — in Switzerland, Europe, and globally.

We focus on the integrated analysis of four key systems (E⁴ approach):

  1. Energy systems and markets
  2. Economic and societal systems
  3. Environmental systems (in collaboration with the Technology Assessment Group, TAG)
  4. Behavioural dynamics of consumers and society

EEG develops and applies energy-economic models, enhanced by consumer behaviour models and market simulations, to evaluate the implications of energy and climate policies. By using robust scenario techniques, we explore alternative transformation pathways across technological, economic, and social dimensions — from national net-zero strategies to global decarbonisation challenges.

Our work is grounded in rigorous systems thinking and policy relevance, enabling decision-makers to navigate complex trade-offs and long-term risks in the energy transition.

🧭 Strategic Pillars of the Energy Economics Group (EEG)

1. Deliver World-Class Systems Analysis for Policy and Society

We develop and apply advanced, scalable, and integrated modelling tools to inform robust pathways toward a resilient and net-zero energy future.
  • Lead in whole-system modelling - multi carrier, multi-sectoral and multi-dimensional
  • Analyse technology adoption, market evolution, and system-level trade-offs
  • Explore economic, environmental, and societal interactions
  • Ensure models remain modular, flexible, and policy-relevant

2. Strengthen Impact and Visibility Across Stakeholder Communities

We build trusted relationships with policymakers, industry, and society by delivering insights that matter and by actively shaping national and international dialogue.
  • Deepen engagement with European and Swiss stakeholders
  • Contribute to flagship initiatives
  • Expand scientific partnerships and consulting-type collaborations
  • Maintain strong participation in IEA TCP ETSAP, IAMC, and OR communities
  • Enhance EEG’s brand and visibility through outreach, publications, and media

3. Foster a Culture of Research Excellence and Integrity

We aim to attract and support top talent by fostering a rigorous, inclusive, and dynamic research environment.
  • Uphold scientific integrity, transparency, and reproducibility
  • Strengthen supervision and mentoring practices
  • Encourage internal exchange and interdisciplinary dialogue
  • Create pathways for career development, leadership, and recognition

🔄 Cross-Cutting Enabler: Capacity Building & Systems Thinking

We promote systems thinking and integrated analysis through education, training, and active contribution to scientific communities.
  • Support teaching, training, and capacity building within PSI and beyond
  • Develop early-career researchers in integrated modelling and policy analysis
  • Contribute to energy systems education at the national and European level
