Aram Bugaev discovers new methods for operando characterization of functional materials under working conditions.

After obtaining his PhD in Chemistry and Materials Sciences from the University of Turin (Italy) in 2017, he started his research team at the Southern Federal University (Russia), where he obtained a Habilitation Degree in Physics in 2021 and became a vice-director of the Smart Materials Research Institute. In 2023 he joined the Operando Spectroscopy group at PSI, being responsible for X-ray spectroscopy support within ReMade@ARIE project.

From 2025, he leads a SynFlow group at PSI's Center Photon Science. The group focuses on the characterization of homogenous and heterogenous catalysts by means of synchrotron techniques, supported by SNSF Starting Grant "Microfluidic reactors to uncover structure-performance relationships in heterogenous and homogenous catalysis in flow". The key research directions of the group are:

  • Rational design and optimization of catalysts and catalytic processes
  • Design of in situ and operando cells for homogenous and heterogenous catalysis, including microfluidics
  • Development of novel analytical approaches using big data and machine learning algorithms.
