The low mass HV-MAPS-based pixel detector is the heart of the Mu3e experiment. The outer pixel detector with 17 or 18 chips per ladder and a length of 36 cm is particularly challenging. The Mu3e team in Oxford has now built first ladders to these specifications, bringing together ultra-thin pixel chips, aluminium-polymide high-density interconnects and carbon-fibre stiffeners.
