Biography

Luc Patthey is Titular Professor at the University of Fribourg, as well as head of the Laboratory for Advanced Spectroscopy and X-ray Sources (LSX) at PSI. He did all his degrees at the University of Lausanne including his PhD where he studied angle resolved photoemission and photoelectron diffraction in Oxides and Semiconductor surfaces. During his post-doc, at Uppsala University, he investigated ultrafast dynamics in model systems for dye-sensitized solar cell with synchrotron radiation and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy. He joined the Swiss Light Source project at Paul Scherrer Institut as beamline scientist in 1998 and, in 2002 was appointed group leader for Spectroscopy on Novel Material. His research focused on the electronic structure of correlated system such as metal oxide and superconductor material in combination with photoemission spectroscopy, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and thin film growth. In 2009, he had a sabbatical visit at Stanford University and at Stanford National Accelerator Laboratory SLAC in Palo Alto, California as visiting scientist. He took part in the first experiments at the XFEL Linac Coherent Light Source LCLS for ultrafast phenomena in condensed matter with resonant elastic and inelastic X-ray scattering. In 2012, he became responsible for the Aramis hard X-ray beamline of the SwissFEL project and, in 2017 took over the responsibility for the SwissFEL-photonic project. He is currently in charge of the SwissFEL phase II project, the Athos soft X-ray beamline.

Institutional Responsibilities

The Laboratory for Advanced Spectroscopy and X-ray Sources (LSX) is one of the seven laboratories in the Photon Science (PS) Division. The LSX is responsible for the design and the realization of novel schemes for insertion devices, optics, photon diagnostics and instrumentation by of large projects for the Swiss Light Source (SLS) as well as for the Swiss X-ray Free Electron Laser (SwissFEL). Luc Patthey is member of the strategy group “Free Electron Lasers” by LEAPS – the League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources and member of the Science Advisory Committee for the Soft X-ray Laser (SXL), Max IV, Lund, Sweden. In the past member of MAX IV Program Advice Committee, Committee for the Review MAX IV soft X-ray beamlines, DORIS III Project Review Panel, HASYLAB-DESY, and Diamond User Working Group, UK. He is member of the program committee for international conferences and reviewer for funding agencies and journals.

Scientific Research

Luc Patthey’s scientific research is currently focused on large scale instrument science for photon science. Projects include the development novel schemes for undulator, optical beam transport and instrumentation for Synchtrotron and X-FEL. In addition, scientific research covers ultrafast dynamics in condensed material and quantum matter studied by resonance X-ray scattering and high resolution photo-electron spectroscopy on high correlated electron material.
