William Hearn is a postdoctoral researcher in the Structure and Mechanics of Advanced Materials group (SMAM). He recieved his bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Toronto, and recieved his master’s degree in Materials Engineering from the University of Alberta where he was part of the Advanced Materials & Processing Laboratory (AMPL). He then obtained his PhD from Chalmers University of Technology where he was part of the Centre for Additive Manufacture – Metal (CAM2). His PhD work focused on the development of new materials for additive manufacturing technologies, specifically the development of structural steels for PBF-LB. After his PhD, he joined the SMAM group in 2023 to study the optimization of acoustic emissions for miniaturized PBF-LB systems during operando x-ray diffraction and imaging experiments.

William’s research focuses on the development and optimization of acoustic emissions to capture phenomena during PBF-LB such as defect formation, phase transformations and recrystallization. This involves correlating recorded acoustic emissions to results from operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and imaging experiments.
