Research in various fields of condensed matter physics. The solid state structures group operates several diffractometers at SINQ, including the high resolution neutron powder diffractometer HRPT, the cold neutron powder diffractometer DMC, and the neutron single crystal diffractometer TriCS and the crystal testing instrument Orion.
Research in various fields of condensed matter physics, such as High Temperature Superconductors and Critical Phenomena in Ferroelectrics. Also the Solid State Dynamics group operates the instruments FOCUS, RITA II, TASP and MARS at SINQ.
Research in various fields connected to soft condensed matter physics. Their focus lies on structure and dynamics in materials with relevant length scales in the nm-range. The Soft Matter group operates several instruments at SINQ including SANS I & II, AMOR and Echo as well as inhouse and test instruments.
Advanced neutron imaging techniques like high-resolution tomography, grating interferometry or energy-resolved imaging using neutron beams at the SINQ radiography stations NEUTRA and ICON are implemented for scientific and industrial users. Quantitative imaging techniques can be used e.g. for studying water migration in various porous media. Applications cover a wide spectrum of research fields, including cultural heritage objects.
