ISCHESS

Integration of stochastic renewables in the Swiss electricity supply system

Electricity grids have historically required generation to match consumption on a second-by-second basis. However, in the future high shares of renewable energy sources (RES) may penetrate the electricity system, creating challenges to this fundamental requirement given that several RES technologies produce variable, uncontrollable and partly unpredictable amounts of electricity.

The ISCHESS project is studying the impacts of adding distributed stochastic RES generation to the Swiss electricity system, in 2 phases. The first seeks to evaluate the impact of RES (mainly photovoltaic generation) at the distribution voltage level, while the second phase is considering the Swiss national scale (and thus also the transmission grid, along with a wider range of RES and additional storage options).
