Uwe Filges has been appointed new Head of the Laboratory for Neutron and Muon Instrumentation LIN as of 1 November 2025.
Uwe studied Nuclear Energy Engineering at the Technical University of Dresden. He subsequently obtained his PhD, also at the Technical University of Dresden, on the topic “International Nuclear Safeguards” in collaboration with the IAEA in Vienna. In 2001, he joined the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering. In 2011, he became Head of the Neutron Optics and Scientific Computing Group, and since 2018, he has also served as Deputy Head of the Laboratory for Neutron and Muon Instrumentation.
During his 24 years at PSI, he has played a key role in the development and advancement of the instrumentation at SINQ. A particular highlight is his role as project leader for the SINQ Neutron Guide Upgrade, a project with a budget of 17 million Swiss francs that was successfully completed in 2019/2020 on time and within budget.
Uwe enjoys international recognition in the field of neutron instrumentation as well as in Monte Carlo simulations for neutron optics and shielding. He is a core developer of the Monte Carlo program McStas. His research focuses on developing sophisticated prototypes and manufacturing methods for instrumentation at large-scale research facilities. A recent example is his innovative work in additive manufacturing. In this field, his research group is a global leader in producing 3D printing filaments and prototypes for neutron optical components and shielding.
We wish Uwe every success and satisfaction in his new position at PSI.
