Battery Materials and Diagnostics Group
Our goal is to develop novel materials and to improve existing materials for Li-ion, Li-S, and exotic (Na, Mg, Ca, etc...) batteries. We apply different synthetic routes, such as sol-gel chemistry, mechanosynthesis, solid state synthesis under various controlled atmospheres, and microwave synthesis to control the morphology and obtained the most promising electrochemical performances of a dedicated systems.

Observer des batteries tout solides en train de se déformer
Des chercheurs de l’Institut Paul Scherrer PSI ont observé avec une précision inégalée à ce jour des processus mécaniques qui se passent dans les batteries tout solides. Le recours à la tomographie aux rayons X à la Source de Lumière Suisse SLS leur a permis de découvrir le mode de propagation des fissures à l’intérieur des batteries. Leurs conclusions pourraient permettre d’améliorer la sécurité et la performance des batteries des voitures électriques et des smartphones.
An overview about all-solid-state batteries research activities and characterization capabilities at PSI
All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are forecasted to play a central role in the next generation of high energy density and safe storage devices. However, ASSBs still an immature technology and require further advancements on multiple fronts like interface (electro-)chemical and mechanical instabilities. Here, we provide an overview about PSI efforts in (i) employing advanced operando laboratory and synchrotron-based analytical methods to shed light into the various degradation mechanisms and (ii) our capabilities for interface chemical engineering.
