Biography
Changling Li is a PhD student in the X-Ray Tomography Group at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), and the Otology and Neurotology Unit at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV). She holds an MSc in Life Sciences Engineering from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), completing her MSc thesis on Brain-Computer Interfaces at Logitech in 2024. The project aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of controlling an immersive VR user interface using EEG and neural network models.
Scientific Research
As part of the VISION-EAR project, Changling's research focuses on the biomechanics of the human middle ear using dynamic phase-contrast microtomography. Investigating the mechanics of hearing in detail has been challenging due to the small anatomical dimensions within the temporal bone. However, this sophisticated imaging method provides ultra-high-resolution images with excellent soft-tissue contrast, allowing histological-level details of the human ear to be seen.
First, the experimental setup will be improved to increase the resolution of dynamic SR X-PCI at higher frequencies and lower decibels, breaking new ground in our understanding of middle ear biomechanics in normal, diseased and reconstructed states. Next, the current analysis and registration pipelines will be automated on the large datasets generated by dynamic SR X-PCI. The improved method will then be compared with the gold-standard Laser Doppler Vibrometry technique for assessing ME biomechanics.
Changling's PhD is being conducted in close collaboration with the Otology and Neurotology Unit at CHUV in Lausanne, Switzerland, under the supervision of Prof. Lukas Anschütz, and with the X-ray Tomography Group at PSI in Villigen, Switzerland, under the supervision of Dr Anne Bonnin.
