Measurement system for time-dependent magnetic moments of coherent superposition states
In this project you will build, test and use a system that measures the fast (tens of GHz) oscillations of the magnetic moment of rare-earth (terbium) atoms. In a solid-state matrix these atoms have an interesting property, that different excited electronic states carry different magnetic moments. When the atoms are placed in a superposition between two pure states this magnetic moment will oscillate at the frequency of the energy difference. This opens a way for switching interactions between neighboring terbium atoms on and off, which can be used for quantum information processing.
In a first step, we will construct a static magneto-optical measurement setup, based on the Faraday effect, around our low-temperature cryostat. This system will be tested for stability and speed. Then, we will use microwaves to create the superposition state and to trigger a fast measurement of the magnetic moments.
The work is performed at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) synchrotron at the Paul Scherrer Institut. You will be part of the Quantum Technologies Group and will work with a team of experimental physicists. For further details please contact Dr. Guy Matmon.
