SANS-II: Small Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument

SANS-II is a six meter SANS instrument installed at the end of the cold neutron guide RNR12. It is the former Risø-SANS instrument, which was moved to PSI and has become operational at PSI in 2002. SANS-II is operated by the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering (LNS) of Paul Scherrer Institute.

SANS-II offers various sample environments for samples ranging from soft matter to magnetism and superconductivity, see the list of available sample environments for detailed information.

The accessible q-range of SANS-II is in the range from 0.002 to 0.35 Å^-1. I.e. structures with typical sizes from 1.5 up to about 300 nm can be detected. The scattered neutrons are counted by a 3He detector with 128 x 128 pixels and a pixel size of 4.3 mm.

Examples of experimental results obtained at SANS-II can be found in the list of publications. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us LINK.

Instrument Description

The main characteristics of this Small-Angle Neutron Scattering instrument are as follows:

  • neutron wavelength range: 4.5 - 20 Å
  • beam collimation: 2 - 6 m (moveable one-meter sections)
  • sample-to-detector distance (SDD): 1.1 - 6 m
  • area detector: diameter 64 cm, 128×128 pixels
  • accessible q-range: 0.002 – 0.35 Å -1
  • flux in the sample position for 4 m collimation and l=4.5 Å: 30000 n/s/cm 2 /mrad 2 /mA

See the instrument description page for details.
