Dr. Eugenio Paris

Since September 2020, Eugenio Paris is a beamline scientist at the Furka endstation of the Athos beamline at the SwissFEL. He obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, where he worked under the supervision of Prof. Naurang L. Saini. In his doctoral studies, he investigated the interplay between local lattice distortions and electronic properties of novel superconductors and other functional materials using various experimental techniques, including x-ray absorption (EXAFS, XANES) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES). In 2017, he joined the Paul Scherrer Institute as a postdoctoral researcher, where he focused on the study of elementary excitations in transition metal oxide materials, using Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) both in the static and ultrafast domains.
Eugenio Paris is responsible for the design and installation of the upcoming experimental station Furka (LAP) at the soft X-ray beamline Athos at SwissFEL.
The scientific research of Eugenio Paris focuses on the investigation of novel phenomena arising from the collective interactions among electrons in solids and from the interplay between different degrees of freedom. His experimental approach consists of employing resonant spectroscopy and scattering techniques both in the static and ultrafast domains, to obtain energy-, momentum-, and time-resolved information. Specific topics in his research include the effect of local structural distortions in superconductors and high spin-orbit coupled oxides, as well as the prospect of using light pulses to manipulate the quantum states in complex materials.
