PSI-FELLOW-III-3i Programme (2020 - 2025)

PSI-FELLOW-III-3i is a new post doctoral programme co-funded by Horizon2020 of the European Commission (2020-2025)
Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) opens PSI-FELLOW-II-3i, to enable individual experienced researchers (Postdocs) from all over the world to pursue their research career at one of our internationally recognised research divisions.

What is it?
PSI-FELLOW-III-3i is an individual driven research and career advancing fellowship and offers experienced researchers a 2-year full employment postdoc-contract at PSI.
PSI is active in condensed matter physics, materials sciences, particle physics, life sciences and medicine, nuclear and non-nuclear energy research and energy-related ecology. The Postdocs will benefit from the outstanding research infrastructures, including access to world leading large-scale facilities such as the Swiss Light Source (SLS), Swiss Free Electron Laser (SwissFEL), the Spallation Neutron Source (SINQ), the Swiss Muon Source (SµS). In addition to the highly innovative scientific environment, PSI-FELLOW offers great opportunities for continuous education and training in areas such as project management, presentation-techniques and improvement of language skills, etc.

Who is eligible?
Please read carefully the eligibility criteria and contact us in case of questions.

How is the gender balance of the programme?
The goal of the programme is to employ at least 30% female researchers. We strongly encourage females to apply for the programme.

Duration  and important date
The programme consists of two calls for applications, the first one will be on the 1st of September 2020 and the second one will be on the 1st of September 2022. Both calls will have the deadline for submission of applications on the 30th of November.
PSI-FELLOW-III-3i Postdocs are offered a PSI contract of two years. The programme will host in total 60 fellows over the project period of 60 months (2020 - 2025).

What are the financial provision?
PSI-FELLOW-III-3i offers a highly competitive living allowance, mobility allowance and family allowance. The programme fully pays the training costs of the Fellows. In addition it also covers partially travel- and registration-costs of conferences in Switzerland and abroad.

What is the aim?
The programme will contribute to sustainable scientific excellence of the ERA by enabling a new generation of highly qualified researchers to efficiently disseminate scientific knowledge and to enable them for a successful career. PSI-FELLOW-III-3i is cofounded by Horizon2020 MSCA-COFUND under Grant Agreement 884104.

PSI-FELLOW-II-3i is the second post doctoral programme co-funded by Horizon2020 of the European Commission (2016-2021)

PSI-FELLOW-II-3i Postdocs are offered a PSI contract of two years. The programme will host in total 60 fellows over the project period of 60 months. The programme will end on September 30, 2021.

PSI-FELLOW-II-3i is cofounded by Horizon2020 MSCA-COFUND under Grant Agreement 701647. The programme will contribute to sustainable scientific excellence of the ERA by enabling a new generation of highly qualified researchers to efficiently disseminate scientific knowledge.

PSI-FELLOW was the first post doctoral programme co-funded by Horizon2020 of the European Commission (2016-2021)

In 2012 PSI launched a 60-month programme open to researchers worldwide who had completed their PhD and wanted to further their careers in one of PSI’s research topics. This included not only matter, materials, energy, ecology, medicine and life sciences, but also new accelerator concepts and beam characterisation. Through a transparent, merit-based evaluation and selection process with internal and external experts, the Institute recruited 64 fellows from 2012 to 2017 over two rounds of applications.

The fellows were recruited as postdoctoral researchers for up to 24 months, with a third of them specialising in synchrotron radiation and nanotechnology. The new researchers benefited from excellent on-site research facilities, including the Swiss Light Source, Spallation Neutron Source, Swiss Muon Source or proton accelerator, and Hot Laboratory for radioactive material.

Over their 2-year secondment, the fellows conducted multidisciplinary research with the support of high-level scientists to address some of the world’s key challenges related to industry, society, economy and environment. The fellows’ research was disseminated through more than 150 peer-reviewed journals and 170 conferences.

Overall, the project was instrumental in retaining talent in Europe and in contributing to the ERA. It raised research competitiveness and contributed a wealth of findings and outcomes to stimulate the knowledge-led economy of Europe. Lastly, the 2-year programme has helped launch the fellows’ careers and increase the pool of researchers in the continent, who are now armed with a plethora of skills and experiences.
