Ultrasound Mechanobiology

Development of nanoscale acoustic tweezers

In this PhD project awareded by the Swiss Nanoscience Institute, Uni. Basel, we explore ultrasound mechano-biology and mechano-genomics by developing nanoscale acsoutic tweezers (ATZs) for non-invasive intracellular manipulation in collaboration with Prof. Rodelick Lim, Biozentrum, Uni. Basel.

Development of Ultrasonic Acoustic Levitation Diffractometer

Ultrasonic acoustic levitation diffractometer (ALD) is a novel tool for protein crystallography experiments combining the acoustic levitation, fast-frame-rate X-ray image detector, and high-brightness X-ray source. We aim at realizing a high-speed, high-sample-efficiency, high-throughput crystallography tool at room temperature. The ALD is being developed at the protein crystallography beamline PX1 at XSA06, Swiss Light Source.

Schematic overview of ALD
Acoustic levitation diffractometer (ALD): a highly brilliant X-ray beam irradiates the sample in an acoustically levitated droplet. The X-ray diffraction images from all the crystal orientations are continuously captured by the fast-frame-rate pixelated X-ray image detector, while the sample is rotated within the droplet via acoustic streaming [1].
