PSI Light Microscopy Facility

The Light Microscopy Facility (LMF) at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) has been initiated through the recruitment and start-up funds awarded to Prof. G.V. Shivashankar (Shiva) by ETH Zurich (ETHZ) to establish the Mechano-Genomics Group at ETHZ/PSI in 2020.

LMF is embedded within the Laboratory of Multiscale Bioimaging, one of the three laboratories of the Center for Life Sciences at PSI. The facility is operated through a steering committee (comprising of Dr. Martin Behe @ PSI, Dr. Adrian Wanner @ PSI and Prof. G.V. Shivashankar @ETHZ/PSI) and coordinated by two facility managers Dr. Philipp Berger (Science) and Ms. Antonietta Gasperina (Administration).

Recently, the LMF has partnered with NIKON to establish a Center of Excellence in “Multiscale Correlative Light Microscopy”. The mission of LMF and the Nikon Center of Excellence (NCoE) is to push the boundaries of correlative imaging modalities (from molecules to tissues) combined with AI for biomedical research.

In addition, LMF and NCoE offers state-of-the art light microscopes, slide scanner, flow cytometry and spatial imaging proteomic facilities for both academic and industry users. Link to online bookings and user-fee can be found here. A brief description of the LMF and NCoE instruments are found here.
