Research Groups

The Electrochemistry Laboratory comprises 6 interacting research groups that deal with almost all aspects of electrochemical energy storage and conversion:

Battery Materials and Diagnostics

Our first goal is to develop novel materials and to improve existing materials for Li/Na-ion batteries. We apply different synthetic routes, such as sol-gel chemistry, mechano-synthesis, solid-state synthesis under various controlled atmospheres, and microwave synthesis to control the morphology and to obtain the most promising electrochemical performances of the investigated systems. We have also the capability of realizing thin film growth of solid electrolyte, cathode and anode materials for applications e.g. in micro-batteries or to be used as model electrodes. The thin films growth are performed in our UHV cluster connected to the XPS spectrometer and equipped with RF sputtering, e-gun evaporators under various gas atmosphere.... More

Battery Electrodes and Cells

The primary goal is the development of a safe, environmentally benign, and cost effective electrochemical energy storage with high energy density. The research work focuses equally on the scientific fundamentals, essential for the development of new technologies, and on the analysis of ageing and safety relevant aspects of current industrial batteries. The investigated systems include both lithium-ion and post-lithium-ion batteries.... More

Electrocatalysis and Interfaces

The Electrocatalysis and Interfaces Group was established in 2012 combining the electrocatalysis activites of the former Fuel Cell Group and the Interface analytical activities from the former Interface and Capacitor Group. Electrocatalysis is the key topic for electrochemical energy conversion. In order to optimize rate, selectivity, energy and stability of a certain electrochemical reaction - such as oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, hydrogen oxidation, and CO2 reduction - proper catalysts have to be developed and optimized. The respective surface and interface analytical tools are essential for the understanding of the catalyst and are utilized in the group... More

FC Systems and Diagnostics

The FC Systems and Diagnostics Group is a collaborative effort of electrochemists and engineers. It was established in 2002 as part of the PSI Laboratory for Electrochemistry. The investigation of the limiting processes and heterogeneities on all the scales are of high interest for improving PEFC technology. An interdisciplinary approach of combined development of modeling and experimental techniques is pursued to elucidate the relevant processes and characteristics and to improve the performance of PEFC technology.... Membranes and Electrochemical Cells

Our mission is to create innovation in the area of polymer electrolyte materials for electrochemical applications, notably fuel cells, electrolysis cells, and redox flow cells. We aim to prepare polymers with desired functionalities for the respective application and operating conditions, using commercially available and low-cost materials (base films, monomers and additives) and industrially viable processing techniques. Furthermore, we develop dedicated diagnostic methods to study limitations in cell performance and aging of materials and components... More.

Neutron Imaging of Electrochemical Systems

The Neutron Imaging of Electrochemical Systems group is engaged in the critical task of developing advanced electrochemical systems for conversion and storage applications. While the fields of study are diverse, we focus on applying state-of-the-art neutron techniques for visualization of operando. The group current activities mainly focus on fuel cells (polymer electrolyte), water electrolysis and lithium ion batteries. However, the field of applications is much wider... More
