FLAME Developments

Software control of FLAME is being migrated the latest version of the MIDAS data acquisition system. This should enable users to access the following new features:

  • Full web-based experimental control via Midas custom pages.
  • Improved History panels.
  • Python based scripting of the experimental plan.

Within the High Intensity Muon Beam (HIMB) Project, PSI is aiming to strongly enhance the available muon intensity in the two secondary beamlines attached to target M, i.e. also in FLAME. A novel detection scheme that is able to perform position-resolved measurements at such a high muon rate will first be developed for GPS

In the first stage, FLAME will continue operating with its current silicon photomultipliers based spectrometer. The high rate can then be used to (i) better focus the beam on small samples, and (ii) to allow pulsed measurements in combination with the Muon-On-REquest (MORE) kicker.

A rotation device for the Variox sample stick (~ 1.8 K < T < 300 K) allowing almost 360° sample rotation around the vertical axis is currently being commissioned.
