Neutron electric dipole moment workshop nEDM2014

The PSI Ultracold Neutron Physics together with co-organizers from ETH Zurich, ILL Grenoble, Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology has held the international workshop 'Challenges of the world-wide search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron' at the Centro Stefano Francini in Ascona. The leading experts in the field and students from all experimental efforts came together to discuss ongoing R&D, technical issues and new ideas. After a meeting in Oak Ridge in 2012, this was the second of its kind and will be followed in 2017 by a workshop in Canada.

Weitere Informationen finden Sie hier.

One hundred years of the Franck-Hertz experiment

In time for the centenary of the famous work of James Franck and Gustav Hertz in 1914, PSI's Malte Hildebrandt (NUM/LTP) and two Australian colleagues, Robert Robson and Ronald White, have revisited what is our common wisdom of the interpretation of the Franck-Hertz experiment, see original publication. Many people have heard in school about the studies that resulted in the Nobel-prize in 1925 "for their discovery of the laws governing the impact of an electron upon an atom" and all physicists have learned in their introductory courses about the impact on understanding quantum physics. The authors show that the "conventional interpretation ... is fundamentally flawed" and physicists will find the insights of this new work enlightening. Another article by the same authors in German and addressing a broader physicists audience has appeared in Physik Journal 03/2014, p.43, "Ein Grundstein de.r Atomphysik: Die gängige Lehrbuchinterpretation des Franck-Hertz-Experiments lässt viele Fragen offen."

Simon Gerber receives SGN Young Scientist Prize

Dr. Simon Gerber, former PhD student at the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and Imaging LNS, wins the Young Scientist Prize of the Swiss Neutron Scattering Society SGN/SSDN. He has been awarded for his PhD work entitled Interplay of Unconventional Superconductivity and Magnetism in CeCoIn5. Simon received the prize from the president of SGN/SSDN Prof. Henrik Ronnow at the annual meeting of the Swiss Physical Society in Fribourg. The prize is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements presented in a PhD work and is sponsored by SwissNeutronics.

Five pioneering instruments for the ESS

As a result of two years of intense development and design work at PSI, EPF Lausanne, and further partner institutes in Denmark, four instruments were presented to the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Spallation Neutron Source (ESS). The proposals include an extreme environment spectrometer, a pioneering reflectometer optimized for functional thin-film devices, a small-angle neuron scattering instrument for biology, and a diffractometer for multiple-length scales structural studies. A fifth instrument with Swiss contribution, a neutron imaging instrument, was selected for construction already last year. The Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) supports ESS activities in Switzerland.

International Year of Crystallography 2014 - Paul Scherrer Institute is IYCr Supporter

The International Year of Crystallography 2014 (IYCr2014) commemorates not only the centennial of X-ray diffraction, which allowed the detailed study of crystalline material, but also the 400th anniversary of Kepler’s observation in 1611 of the symmetrical form of ice crystals, which began the wider study of the role of symmetry in matter. Twenty two large-scale facilities, among them the SINQ and the SμS, sponsor the UNESCO/IUCr Open Labs and Summit Meetings initiatives during the International Year of Crystallography - see IYCr Supporters.
