SNF professorship and 2 ERC Starting Grants for neutron electric dipole moment search

2 November 2016

Two emerging leaders in fundamental physics with strong programs at the PSI neutron facilities have been awarded prestigious grants: Florian Piegsa completed his PhD thesis in the group of Ben van den Brandt in LDM/NUM cooperating with TU Munich (Oliver Zimmer) and was the first recipient of the PSI thesis medal in 2009. After postdoc positions at the ILL Grenoble and at the ETH Zurich he worked in the ETH group of Klaus Kirch for the last years. He pursued experiments at SINQ and is a member of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) collaboration at the PSI UCN source.

New NUM Laboratory LMX

1 July 2016

Since July 1, 2016 the NUM division consists of a new fifth laboratory: the Laboratory for Multiscale Materials Experiments LMX. The laboratory hosts two research groups: "Mesoscopic Systems" (head: Laura Heyderman) and "Thin Films and Interfaces" (head: Thomas Lippert). The NUM division head Kurt N. Clausen acts as head of the new laboratory ad interim until a new head of the lab has been appointed. We cordially welcome all new members of the laboratory in NUM.

Robert Scheuermann appointed chairman of the Molecular & Materials Science Experiments Evaluation Committee (MMS-EEC) at TRIUMF Vancouver

22 June 2016

Robert Scheuermann from Laboratory for Muon Spin Spectroscopy LMU has been nominated chairman of MMS-EEC at TRIUMF for the next three years. The committee is a peer review board constituted of distinguished scientists from all over the globe screening the material science experimental proposals at TRIUMF. The Materials Sciences EEC convenes to hear formal proposals twice a year, and then recommends TRIUMF's Director of its priorities in the allocation of beam time and major facilities.
