IEA/ETSAP; Energy Technology Systems Analysis Program, Exploring Energy Technology Perspectives

The general objective of this project is to establish, maintain and expand a consistent multi-country energy/ economy/ environment analytical capability by using a common, comparable methodology based on the MARKAL family of models and its databases.PSI should contribute to the development of the global Markal model.
ETSAP examines options to meet the Kyoto Protocol like the collective potential of key technologies and resources, including regionally limited interim options like natural gas; Performs assessment of alternative international proposals of burden sharing by estimating their differential implications; Evaluates the different R&D strategies and energy policy options; Provides a network of experienced analysts who understand and recognize their national options and concerns.
Building on the results of Annex VII, comprising a new generation of assessment tools and first generation global energy technology models, Annex VIII will make a substantial contribution to the work conducted by the International Energy Agency, national governments, the IPCC and other international organizations on global strategies for sustainable development. Guided by on longer term ambitions, specific attention will be for shorter term initiatives and actions, e.g. of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol seeking to meet the commitments made in December 1997 and plan the next stages of their work in climate change and other sustainability concerns.
PSI continues to contribute to the development of multi-regional trade models with endogenous technological learning, and in particular in this project, multi-regional expansion to include to EU membership (10 additional countries), and internalisation of GHG emissions related externalities.
