Felix Baumberger graduated from the University of Zurich where he also received his doctorate with distinction for a thesis in surface physics under the supervision of Profs. Thomas Greber and Jürg Osterwalder. Following a postdoc in the group of Z.-X. Shen at Stanford University, he was appointed lecturer (assistant prof.) at the University of St. Andrews, UK. During his time in St. Andrews he contributed strongly to building up a UK presence in ARPES, not only by establishing the first UK research group in this field but also by proposing the ARPES beamline I05 at Diamond Light Source. This beamline was funded in 2008 and remains among the first-grade instruments worldwide nearly a decade after it accepted first users. In 2012 Felix Baumberger accepted a professor position at the University of Geneva with joint affiliation at the SLS. Since 2019 he also serves as director of the Department of Quantum Matter Physics at the University of Geneva.

Felix Baumberger leads a project on the electronic structure of oxide heterostructures grown in-situ by molecular beam epitaxy. This project in the “Spectroscopy of Novel Materials” group was funded by a R’Equip grant from the SNSF and is hosted at the SIS beamline of the SLS. He also contributes to developing the strategy for future photoemission experiments at the SLS.

Felix Baumberger’s research focuses on the electronic structure of complex materials. He has co-founded the field of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) on the surface of insulating oxides and has worked on correlated Hund’s metals and metal-insulator transitions in 4d and 5d transition metal oxides. More recently, he pioneered laser-based micro-focus ARPES and starting using this technique for direct electronic structure measurements of van der Waals heterostructures assembled by stacking atomically thin exfoliated crystals of different materials.
