The Synthesis and Processing Platform (SPP) develops advanced functional materials and nanoparticles for catalytic, optical, magnetic, construction, biomedical, and environmental applications. The platform combines expertise in material synthesis, processing, shaping, and characterization of nanoparticles, metal oxides, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), supporting both fundamental research and industrial innovation. A key capability of the platform is flame spray pyrolysis (FSP), a versatile and scalable synthesis technology for producing high-purity oxide nanoparticles and complex nanomaterials with controlled composition, morphology, and functional properties. Through the close integration of experimental research and data-driven modelling, SPP advances the understanding of nucleation and growth mechanisms and enables the rational design of materials with tailored properties and enhanced performance.
SPP provides a broad range of capabilities spanning materials synthesis, processing, shaping, and advanced characterization. The platform supports projects from the early stages of material discovery and process development to application-oriented studies and technology validation. By combining expertise in chemistry, materials science, and process engineering, SPP helps researchers and industrial partners translate scientific knowledge into innovative materials and practical solutions for energy, environmental, and industrial challenges.
Within the Laboratory for Energy Technologies and Innovation, SPP contributes to the development of sustainable technologies by addressing material performance throughout their entire life cycle, from synthesis and processing to application and implementation. The platform places strong emphasis on resource efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and the development of safer and more sustainable materials and processes. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to scientific excellence, SPP supports the transition towards a more sustainable, circular, and low-carbon future.
