PNA

For irradiations with the PNA, the sample material is usually sealed in a quartz vial, then wrapped in aluminum foil for protection and fixation and finally welded in the aluminium transport capsule. Starting from a hot cell placed directly next the SINQ the sample is transported through a short pneumatic tube system to the irradiation position. The way of the return after the exposure is the same. For subsequent transport to an appropriate laboratory, special led shielded transport containers are available.

Advantages compared to the NAA system:
  • Four times the neutron flux
  • Higher limits for the activity and dose rate
  • Greater volume of transport capsule
  • Irradiation time up to 1000 hours
