Biography

Umit Demirbas received his BS degrees in physics & electrical engineering (2004, Koc University), his MS degree in materials science (2006, Koc University), and his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (2010, MIT). He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Chair of Modern Optics and Quantum Electronics of Konstanz University between 2010 and 2012. He founded the Laser Technology Laboratory of Antalya Bilim University in 2012 and has been leading its research activities since then. He is currently a professor of electrical-electronics engineering at Antalya Bilim University and a laser scientist at the Gun Laser Group (Laboratory for Non Linear Optics) of the Paul Scherrer Institut. Earlier, he also worked as a laser scientist at the Ultrafast Optics and X-rays Division of  Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (2016-2023).

Dr. Demirbas is an author and co-author of more than 80 journal papers on laser physics and ultrafast optics. He is the recipient of the Turkish Science Academy Young Scientist Award (2019). He was a European Union Marie Curie CIG Fellow (2012-2016), an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow (2010-2012), and an IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellow (2009).
