Thomas Heck is working as a scientist at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, since 2001. He is member of the Technology Assessment group in the Laboratory for Energy systems Analysis (LEA). His research interests relate to environmental impact assessment, environmental economics, life cycle assessment, and interdisciplinary modelling.

Thomas Heck graduated from the University of Stuttgart with a Diploma degree in Physics in 1989. He was member of the II. Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Stuttgart, from 1989 to 1994 (PhD student and system manager). He received his PhD (Dr.rer.nat.) in Physics from the University of Stuttgart in 1993. From 1995 to 1999, he was employed as scientist at the Institute of Energy Economics and the Rational Use of Energy (IER) at the University of Stuttgart. (Main projects: Generation and Evaluation of Emission Data (GENEMIS) with high spatial and temporal resolution for Europe; EU project ExternE: Externalities of Energy; methodology and national implementation; Leading developer of the major ExternE project model EcoSense, an integrated impact assessment model for calculating environmental impacts and external costs due to air emissions in Europe; Several projects with applications of the ExternE/EcoSense model; Environmental information system of the State of Baden-Württemberg: development of a new system for the automatized generation of hypertext information combining maps from a GIS (Geographical Information System), data and documentation linked together for CD and for Internet. From 1999 to 2001, he was employed at the EUsys-TTI GmbH Stuttgart. (Development of EcoSense versions for China/Asia, Brazil/Latin America, Russia; Applications of environmental impact assessment and GIS; Study of Acid Rain in Hong Kong.)
