I have been pursuing quantum computers based on trapped-ion technology for close to 20 years and am currently leading a team pushing hard on all aspects of scalability of the platform. In parallel, I have been developing and positioning the Quantum Computing Hub as research facility at the Swiss National Laboratory PSI.
A few highlights from past work include:
- the first demonstration of universal digital quantum simulation on a quantum computer (2011)
- building the world's first fully controllable 20 qubit system (2012)
- being part of the eQual consortium realising a logical qubit in the highly competitive IARPA LogiQ program (2016-2021) and it's successor ELQ
- early work on the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) (2014, with colleagues at Harvard and later Google); demonstration published on 2018
- devising the multi-qudit-boson (MQD) analog quantum computing approach for chemical dynamics simulations with colleagues at the University of Sydney (2021, nature chemistry cover 2023)
