Concrete Hot Cells

Die grosse Hotzellenkette im Hotlabor

The concrete hot cell line, operated by HZE group, is dedicated for research on nuclear fuel rods, for material testing and mechanical material processing. Manipulators are being operated through concrete walls of 1 meter in thickness.

The cells could be equipped with different equipment for analytical or sample preparation work. Typically, the following post irradiation examination are performed:

  • Visual inspection
  • Laser-Profilometry
  • 3D-Profilometry (new equipment)
  • Eddy-Current measurement
  • Gamma spectroscopy
  • Fission-Gas-Analysis together with ARM group
  • Hydrogen hot extraction in a special cell
  • Cutting of fuel rods
  • Eroding of special samples
