Research Activities/Specialties
Peter Derlet is a senior staff scientist within the Condensed Matter Theory group at the Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland. He specializes in the atomistic modeling of materials science related issues using semi-empirical methods. His fields of interest are:
- The mechanical properties of materials with complex defect structures.
- The dynamical properties of local and extended defects.
- The development of simulation tools to model the experimental measurement of structural disorder using neutrons, photons and electrons.
- Classical magnetization dynamics in micro- and meso-scopic magnetic systems.
- The vibrational and configurational dynamics of structural glasses well below the glass transition temperature.

- How do amorphous metals age in space? This is a question that cannot be answered through experiments on earth. A team around Prof. Maaß (BAM, UIUC), Prof. Samwer (University of Göttingen), and Prof. Derlet (Paul Scherrer Institute, LSM, Condensed Matter Theory) have been awarded long-term exposure experiments by the European Space Agency. The primary focus of this effort is the structural stability in the extremely harmful environment present in space. Whilst metallic glasses have been shown to exhibit excellent low-temperature properties, their mechanical and structural stability under the strongly varying conditions in space remains unknown. The proposed study is a crucial step towards successful usage of glassy metals in space exploitation. The aging experiments are enabled through exposure on the Bartolomeo platform, Europe’s new ‘front porch’ aboard the International Space Station, and the mission is expected to launch mid-2021.
