Biography

Nicolas MARI is a PhD student at the Paul Scherrer Institut, working on the study of phase transformations and microstructural evolution during additive manufacturing using in situ X-ray techniques.

He graduated from Toulouse INP–ENSIACET with a Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering and also holds a dual degree in Fundamental Physics from Université Paul Sabatier.

Before joining PSI, he carried out research at CEA Saclay, where he studied precipitation phenomena in a novel Ni-based alloy using Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and phase-field modeling. This work was recognized with the Vayssière Award from the French Society for Metallurgy and Materials (Société Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux).

He then joined the Laboratory for Thermomechanical Metallurgy (LMTM) at EPFL, focusing on the microstructural evolution of materials during additive manufacturing through acoustic monitoring, with a particular interest in the link between phase transformation mechanisms and acoustic emission.

At PSI, his current research combines synchrotron-based techniques and materials science to better understand the dynamic processes occurring during additive manufacturing.
