Radiation Protection Studies for PSI’s Proton Accelerator Facilities
Description
The Radiation Monitoring Proton Accelerator Group at PSI is responsible for ensuring the radiation protection of PSI’s proton facilities, HIPA and PROSCAN, along with their connected secondary particle production targets, experimental stations, and treatment stations. Additionally, the group is responsible for the radiological characterization of the radioactive waste produced by accelerator operations and by the various ongoing dismantling and renovation projects.
The selected candidate will take part in the activities carried out by the group, with the opportunity to contribute to radiation measurements, radiological characterizations and develop innovative measuring concepts.
Area of study: Radiation Protection, Radiation Detection
Necessary background
- BSc in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent knowledge
- Experience with a programming language (e.g., Python)
- Basic experience with radiation measurement techniques
What the student will learn
- Insight into most radiation protection aspects of a proton accelerator
- Hands-on experience performing measurements with the typical instrumentation used in radiation protection at PSI
