Instrument Components

ICON has two experiment positions that are used for imaging (2 and 3). The methods used are:

  • Radiography
  • Tomography
  • Stroboscopic imaging
  • Real time imaging
  • Energy selective imaging
  • Grating interferometry

The position closest to the source (1) is used to manipulate the beam and for activation experiments.

The sample can be positioned with the motorized sample table. The table allows linear translations in the plane perpendicular to the beam directions and rotation around the vertical axis. The rotation is used for tomographic acquisitions. All motions are remotely controlled by the beam-line control system from the beam-line control room.

Energy selector

Many materials respond differently to different neutron energies. Normally this cannot be seen due to the averaging effect of the polychromatic beam. The energy selector makes it possible to visualize these responses. Currently, there is one turbine based energy selector available for experiments.

Grating interferometer

Neutron grating interferometry is a method that provides phase and dark field images in addition to the traditional transmission image. The setup requires three components: A source grating, an energy selector, and a set of interferometer gratings.
