Advanced Characterization of Battery Materials

Project description

The development and utilization of innovative characterization techniques, either in post mortem or operando mode, enable to probe the different reaction mechanisms taking place in a cell on the micro and macro-scopic length scales at the bulk level, i.e., lithium insertion and extraction, at the surface level, i.e., SEI formation, as well as at the electrolyte level. Knowing such reaction mechanisms is essential to understand the battery performance. For this purpose, we use and combine a wide range of techniques dedicated to surface and bulk characterization such as x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS)*, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrational spectroscopy (IR and Raman)*, impedance spectroscopy*, x-ray diffraction (XRD)*, etc, in house; and at the synchrotron sources like SLS and SOLEIL, soft and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM), x-ray diffraction*, x-ray absorption spectroscopy*, etc. *Operando electrochemical cells are also available for these techniques.
