Biography

Kate Mary Louise Smith received her Undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Mathematics from Charles Sturt University, Australia, in December 2014. She received a First Class Honours degree in Biochemistry and Structural Biology from Charles Sturt University Australia, in December 2015. During 2016-2019, she completed a PhD researching the importin-alpha family of nuclear import receptors and how they interact with viral proteins from Dengue, Zika and Nipah viruses as well as the human Lysine specific demethylase 1A protein that is implicated in breast cancer progression. In 2019-2020 she completed a 1 year position as a macromolecular crystallography beamline scientist at the Australian Synchrotron. In 2020 she then moved abroad to undertake a postdoctoral position at the Swiss Light Source in the MX group focussing on software development and automation. Since 2021 she has been a software developer in the MX Data Group.

Responsibilities and Research

Kate is a member of the MX Data Group, a subsection of the MX group responsible for data acquisition and processing software serving all three MX beamlines at the Swiss Light Source (SLS).
