Anisotropy tuning in nanomagnets

Thermally active artificial spin systems rely on nanomagnets that can exhibit magnetization fluctuations due to thermal energy. This thermal energy is of the same order of magnitude as the shape anisotropy in the nanomagnets, see SEM image, resulting in Ising-like spins. Tiled up on 2D lattices, these ensembles of nanomagnets can show exotic behavior down to the temperature at which they freeze. This freezing due to the anisotropy is the limiting factor for thermal systems but can be tuned using various interface effects.

Goals:

The aim of this project was to prepare thermally active magnetic nanomagnets on various substrates and to measure the anisotropy using a Kerr microscope.
